Field Fortification - Gabions
Built by the 1st ME on March 14th 2004.
Wicker gabion.
Wire gabion.
GABION: A rough, cylindrical basket, made of wicker, wire or rope, without top or
bottom, some three feet high and two feet in diameter, weighing 50-60 pounds, filled
with soil and stones. Gabions were used to create and reinforce fieldworks. When and
if a greater height was called for, a second tier of gabions would be added on top.

Here are two examples of gabions built by the 1st ME during our recent March 14th
field exercise. The wicker and wire variations were agreed upon as the most particle
variations for field use at re-enactments.
